Mussels
Mussels
Our PEI Coastline Mussels are naturally grown by suspended longline method in the saltwater bays and rivers of P.E.I. This method ensures that our mussels do not contain any grit or pearls inside their shells as they never touch the bottom.
We begin the growing process by placing collector ropes in the river in late June where the mussel larvae is floating. The mussel larvae then attach to the collector ropes and begin to grow by filter feeding the water they are suspended in. After five months growth, we bring in the seed, grade it, place in a sock and put it back out in the salt water to grow for another 12 to 18 months until it reaches market size.
This growing process makes mussels one of the most organically grown crops in the world. They feed naturally on the organic suspended particles in the water surrounding them.
After the mussels are harvested, they are transferred right to our processing plant doors by boat. The mussels are then stripped from the socking material, washed and placed in the holding system under cold, clean saltwater which flushes them further. After soaking for 24 hours they are declumped, debyssed, graded, bagged and iced for shipment to market.
Fresh mussels can be purchased at our facility or can be shipped to customers anywhere in North America on a daily basis. Fresh live mussels can be packed in 2lb, 5lb, 10lb and 25lb bags. These bags can be shipped in a variety of master cartons starting at 25 lbs to 50 lbs and up to 1000 lbs bulk vats.
